How to securely upgrade Bitcoin Core (Linux)

Upgrading to Bitcoin Core v0.18.0 in Ubuntu

1. Download latest release from bitcoincore.org (Linux tgz file)

2. Download the digital signatures file SHASUM.asc (PGP signed)
3. Use the fingerprint of the signing PGP key to import the Public Key into our keyring
gpg --recv-keys 01EA5486DE18A882D4C2684590C8019E36C2E964
4. Verify SHA256SUM.asc
gpg --verify SHA256SUMS.asc
5. Check the sha256 digest of the tgz file against the contents of SHA256SUMS.asc
sha256sum name_of_the_file.tar.gz
6. Expand the tgz file
tar xf name_of_the_file.tar.gz
7. Copy the contents of the /bin directory to /usr/bin (or /usr/local/bin in some distros)
sudo cp * /usr/bin
